Rockstar Brothers Make Music On A Theater Stage

Rockstar brothers Yan and Yael Yuzon are the musical brains behind Tanghalang Ateneo’s newest production 3PO, a Pinoy Pop adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's The Threepenny Opera.

3PO is the thirteenth directorial effort of the older Yan, who graduated in 2000 with a degree in Social Sciences. Yael, currently a junior majoring in Literature, is in charge of arranging, recording, and mixing of the all-new music to be performed in the play. Pressed about why he decided to ask his younger brother to join this production, Yan jokingly quips, “Cause he has lots of fans. It’s a marketing tactic.” If that’s actually the case, he’s right on the money. Both Yuzon brothers are at the moment very visible players in the Philippine Rock music scene. Yan sings and plays guitar for The Mongols and is currently putting up another band called Cat Siamese that younger bro Yael will manage. Yael is the lead vocalist and guitarist of current it-band Sponge Cola whose debut album Palabas remains one of the strongest independent releases in OPM history. According to the brothers, being involved in the same industry has its advantages: Yan says: “Sometimes it saves us gas.”When asked whether his kuya had motivated or influenced him to get into music, Yael says: “Maybe it’s genetic; though it was Yanny who first made me listen to bands like Pearl Jam when we were younger.” Yan himself claims that he and Yael “always talk about music. We just talk and talk and talk until we finally fall asleep. I don’t influence him — we influence each other.”

Yan has also carved a sizeable niche for himself in Philippine theater. He has been involved in the world of dramatics for ten years, acted in over forty plays, and toured the country as one of the most seasoned Tanghalang Ateneo alumni. He’s a thespian through and through whose passion for theater-related work is most evident on-the-job, though he claims that “Theater is more brutal and thankless than anything else I’ve done.”

The brothers’ similarities don’t end with music. Yael was once a theater actor. He was an active member of the Ateneo High School’s Teatro Baguntao, and it was there that he met his fellow Sponge Cola bandmates. Yael reveals that he would love to act again given the chance.

For now, Yan and Yael Yuzon’s involvement makes 3PO the production to watch for. The pop and local version of the Brecht classic is sure to leave audiences entertained.
